Here’s how to use the Mac SECRETS Electronic Edition. It’s as easy as 1-2-3!
1. Restart the Mac with all extensions off except what you need for your CD-ROM drive. Double-click the Install Special Fonts icon.
2. Double-click the program called Install Acrobat Reader, also included in the “Electronic Edition” folder.
3. Restart the Mac.
Now you can just double-click the Mac SECRETS Electronic Edition to open it. Use the Find command (in the Tools menu), or click the little Binoculars icon, to search the entire book!
Of course, you’ll probably want to read the book in an enlarged view on the screen — say, 125% (use the pop-up menu in the lower-left). The most important trick we can convey is:
PRESS THE RETURN KEY REPEATEDLY to scroll through what you’re reading! Don’t bother messing with the scroll bars; Return or Enter automatically adjusts the view to fit the next hunk of text on your screen.
By the way, this electronic edition was prepared in great haste by an outside company, not us. We wish the graphics were clearer…but that’s life in the fast lane, we guess.
About the “missing” software
Unfortunately, some of the programs we had hoped to include on this CD fell through at the last minute. (You wouldn’t believe how much red tape is involved in getting permission for every single program aboard this CD!)
We’ve generally managed to catch the references to these last-minute omissions in the text of the “Macworld Mac SECRETS” book. Unfortunately, we have a sinking feeling that a few mentions slipped through. Specifically, you may find references to:
• ResEdit. As mentioned in Chapter 21, Apple gave us the shaft on this one, enormously increasing the amount the publisher would have had to pay for the right to include ResEdit ... very silly, since ResEdit is widely available online. For free! See Chapter 21 for the online addresses of places you can download ResEdit ... or get it from a local user group, also at no charge.
• ATM Lite. Adobe had hoped to have this product ready by the time our book was done — but the deadline slipped, and ATM Lite was still incomplete when this book was finished. Adobe anticipates that this program, too, will be posted on America Online and on the Internet for free downloading... when it’s ready. (Little hint: Actually, you get ATM anyway when you install the Acrobat Reader, included with this book!)
• MicNotePad. When the time came to finalize the arrangements, we couldn’t find the author! Our e-mail went unanswered. Still, a Lite version of this program, too, is available for downloading online.
About the “Mac Secrets” Web page
In many places in “Macworld Mac SECRETS,” you’ll find references to our Web page. The address is always given as http://www.idgbooks.com/idgbooksonline/macsecrets.
However, just as we sent this book to the printer, IDG Books’ Web folk told us that they were redesigning the IDG Web site, including changing our book’s Web address! Fortunately, they promised that they’d create a pointer for anyone who uses the old Mac Secrets address.
